Project development plan for Boxing Hares tile panel

The client required a feature panel to act as a focal point behind a kitchen range. Her fondness for the hares that inhabit the fields around her house inspired her to commission a panel featuring the springtime ritual of 'boxing'.
The panel was to act as a centre-piece behind the range rather than filling the whole area.

This was because the kitchen was not very large and so the panel was to add a focal point rather than dominate the area.

The drawing, above left, was the initial design for the panel.

The client felt that she would like to include the local landmark of Stonehenge somewhere in the image, and this provided the opportunity to create a more interesting backdrop.

The time of day has also been defined as dawn in order to give a dramatic feel to the scene.

The client required a border round the panel and wished to continue the theme of representing the local countryside by commissioning a design based on flowering hawthorn.

The painterly nature of this hand-painted border successfully enhanced the panel without making a harshly definitive edge.
