Project development plan for a kitchen installation

Tile mural panorama of Wuppertal, Germany

To achieve this panoramic tile mural, Mike made drawings of Wuppertal's surrounding landscape and the sculptures, architecture and engineering features that the town is famous for. Back in the studio, he put these together to make a realistic landscape, incorporating all of Wuppertal's landmarks. Additionally, the design was tailored to fit in with the structural features of the kitchen.

The finished tile mural laid out ready for installation

The client required a panoramic mural to install in the newly refurbished kitchen of a house near Dusseldorf. The inspiration for the mural was the area in and around Wuppertal, one that is rich in history and has many well known features and landmarks. Mike Francis travelled to the area and made extensive drawings of the town's heritage style. This was a complicated project which necessitated the construction of a continuous landscape which took in all of Wuppertal's well known features, using them to make a credible landscape.

The choice of colour for this mural was a dark red so Mike painted in traditional manganese dioxide, a naturally occurring metallic oxide which has been used for centuries to provide a maroon red colour. The glaze used was cream.
